The bowler hat, sometimes called a billy cock, bob hat or derby, is usually a hard felt hat with an outward flat crown, originally made by the London fashion-dressers Thomas and William Bowler around 1849. It is worn by men of all ages, even though it is typically associated with men. A hat that is worn to a sporting event may not necessarily be worn to a formal dinner party. The same cannot be said for the fashion aspects of it, though. It has traditionally always been worn either with casual and semi-formal attire. Since then it has grown to become a staple accessory of women’s and men’s formal wear alike.

However, there are also instances when the hat can be appropriate for the more formal style. Especially if it is worn with a jacket or suit, it can project a more formal image than it would just a regular baseball cap or beanie hat. With so many different types available, there really is no limit what kind of hat can be worn for any occasion.

Fashion-wise, bowler hats have been popular for decades. The hat has been growing in popularity not only in England but in other parts of the world, too. It has found its way into the mainstream in a big way. Nowadays it is frequently seen at upscale weddings, high-class social events and upscale club parties. It is the kind of accessory that people have been wearing since the 1970s, when it was popularized by rock bands. It is the sort of hat that you would want your grandmother to have as well.
